Welcome to the home of the 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, D Battery. We are a reenacting unit from St. Petersburg, Florida.
Our unit is made up primarily of cadets from Dixie Hollins High School JROTC, a program with which 1st Sgt has been associated for many years.
We are a group of reenactors of the period of history known as the American Civil War, War Between The States, War Of Rebellion, War Of Northern Aggression, The Past Unpleasantness, and various other names. Regardless by which name you know it, this is one of the most fascinating periods in our Nation's History. Our unit is dedicated to presenting as authentic a picture of that period as modern times will permit. We are made up of a wide range of ages, from 12 years old to 60 years young! We all enjoy the various aspects of the hobby, camping, period music, and a love of history.
We portray the 1st Pennsylvania because while doing genealogical research it was discovered that great-great uncle James William Butler on my wife’s side enlisted at Harrisburg PA at the age of 17 in June of 1861. He continued with the US Army until he retired 38 years late in 1899. To him this site is dedicated!
Our season runs from Labor Day until the end of May. Most of our events are within a 150 mile radius from home. We do, on occasion, travel further but find that closer events are less stressful.
When the unit is not in the field, the piece may be found at Dixie Hollins High School Army JROTC. The Honor Guard Cadets train on the piece in all facets from operation of the gun to safety in its use. They will fire the piece at the home games during football season, on Veteran's Day, and any other commitments that may arise.
One year we were honored to appear at the Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) when they had their Massing of the Colors. Some of the cadets have gone on to become members of the Reenacting Unit and some have gone on from there to enlist in the military services and are now serving our country in various locations around the world including Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Japan and Korea. |
